Harriet’s Café Opening Soon, Civano Exercise Studio Now Open

By Susan Hamilton Harriet’s Café, Near the Civano Neighborhood Center How many times have we heard, “If only Civano had a coffee shop!” It’s been more than ten years since there was a coffee shop in our neighborhood, but the wait is almost over. Harriet’s Café hopes to open by early October, offering coffee, tea, slushies, sodas, ice cream, pastries and other snacks. The coffee shop at the intersection of Civano Boulevard and Seven Generations has the perfect space for gathering with neighbors and friends – an inviting and expansive front porch, comfortable inside seating area with WiFi, and roomy…

Sunday Soup Suppers are Up and Running!

By Rich and Ann Bates Many thanks to Judyth Willis and Sue Nedrow for reviving the community soup suppers last year on a regular basis, with community members like Rick and Linda Hanson stepping in to find speakers. For those of you who missed these events, many were standing-room only, and we hope to continue that momentum this year. We have a full range of soup suppers and speakers for the third Sunday of each month (but we’ll skip December). The suppers are held in the Civano activity center from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. The first one this fall is…

Civano Horseshoe Pit is Here

By Jerry Walker About a month ago, six devoted male members of the coffee group that meets Monday, Wednesday. and Friday assembled by the Community Garden to construct the first-ever community horseshoe pit. The construction crew, led by Ron Canady and composed of Mel Harrington, Jerry Walker, Mark Levine, Bob Small, and Manny Cabranes, turned out at 5:30 a.m.on July 24. Hard workers all, they dug two holes about 3’ square and 6” deep, installed the wood frames, the stakes (set in concrete cans previously built by Ron), and the backboards (also built by Ron: what a guy!) Finally, the…

Bocce Ball Court Rolls In

By Jerry Walker The Civano Horseshoe Pits, otherwise known as the CHP, have been installed: check them out next to the Civano Community Garden. Recently we began work on the Civano Bocce Ball Court, affectionately known as the CBBC, also located next to the Garden. Everything has initials now days to make it sound more important than it is. We have the CCAA, FBI, JD, POTUS, SCOTUS, DRC, SSA, LOR, — and now the CBBC. The space was staked out at 72’ x 8’, dimensions that are within the official rules for the game. Take a look at the pictures.…

Neighbors Care Alliance: Civano Aging in Community Report

By Sharlene Gillette New Client Manager and Volunteer Manager Needed! In July, Civano’s Aging in Community group provided services to 30 residents in our neighborhood, through the generous donation of time and energy by its 14 volunteers. Over 100 total hours were spent on activities such as transportation, delivery of meals, and running errands. These included friendly visits and phone calls, providing relief to caregivers and light home maintenance. Doesn’t it sound like something that you might be able to do? Our community support group, AIC, could always use more volunteers, with only 22 currently registered. And, most importantly, we…

Civano Movie Group Goes Bollywood: 2012/2013 Schedule

By Judyth Willis A Taste of India is the theme for the 2012/2013 Civano Movie Nights, scheduled for the third Wednesday of the month beginning in October. Dust off your Nehru jacket or dig out your bangle bracelets, and be sure to join the movie mavens on October 17th for the first in a series of movies made in or about India. Treats are always welcome and, for those adventurous in the kitchen, perhaps a recipe of Hyderabadi haleem. (Never mind, I just wanted to show off that I could spell it.) And there will be food! At the end…

Donate to the Civano Community Middle School Library

By Sharlene Gillette More Shelves than Books: Help Our Next Generations as They Learn Over the past two years, our former neighbor Brenda Patrick collected and purchased wonderful books to help the Civano Community Middle School build its library. She worked from a “wish list” the school had generated, and you would be amazed at the recognizable books on that list for the students! A small group of us now would like to carry on Brenda’s project, working from a new wish list, and we invite the entire community to join us as we work with the school. Here is…
