Remembering Civano Resident Brenda Patrick

May 16, 2012
Brenda Patrick

By Sharlene Gillette Long-time resident Brenda Patrick passed away on February 12, 2012. Her wish was to be cremated and remembered by family and friends at an informal service, with no flowers or donations. Phil Ogden, her husband, led the service, which was held on May 5 in the Civano Activity Center. He showed pictures of Brenda, depicting her life, family and friends. There were many in attendance, representing family, friends and the numerous groups with which she had been associated, including many of her friends here in Civano. A light Mexican buffet was served, honoring Brenda’s fondness for the food acquired during her years...

Sunday Soup Suppers Taking the Summer Off; Step Up for Fall!

By Susan Call Those of us who enjoyed the Sunday evening suppers, featuring soups and salads donated by our neighbors, will want to plan ahead for the fall when we hope these events will return. Since February, we have been treated to these get-togethers on the third Sundays of the month. The suppers were the result of a sort of spontaneous suggestion, when Judyth Willis and Sue Nedrow organized the first one. In March, Linda Hanson and Mary Robertson lined up soups and other dishes for the meal, with Kevin Kelly, one of the original developers of Civano, speaking after the...

Civano Community School Rummage Sale and Root Beer Floats!

By Susan Call On April 21, Civano Neighbors took advantage of the Civano Community School’s annual rummage sale to offer ice cream floats in celebration of this year’s Earth Day. The turnout for the sale was great, even if the ice cream floats weren’t as popular as hoped. Thanks to Todd Craig for serving as “soda jerk” for the event!

February Soup Supper—A Super Success!

By Sue Nedrow Thanks to you, Civano folks, I am so pleased to report that the February Soup Supper was a success! Thanks from both Judyth and me for your enthusiastic support. Civano folks seemed ready to pass the word, cook, read the emails, mailbox signs, the neighbor website, and The Town Crier to make the dinner a winner. Thanks to the soup cooks, the sign maker, the committee people who spread the word, and the speaker, and all the folks who helped make the evening possible. We had nine soups, several salads, a variety of breads, and numerous...

Holiday Fair a Big Success!

January 8, 2012
Holiday Fair

By Linda Green December 3, 2011, turned out to be a great day for a fair. Although the day’s weather started out ominous and the artisans were concerned about setting up for a rain-filled event, at about 10:00 a.m. the sun came out and stayed out until the mid afternoon. We have heard only good things from everybody about how worthwhile, different and fun this fair was. All 19 artisans who participated with booths, whether they lived in Civano or came from another part of Tucson, felt the energy of the crowd and the ambiance of Civano. The vendors...

FYI: Out and About in Civano and Tucson

Wednesday Film Nights Here is a reminder that there are films in the Neighborhood Center on the third Wednesday of the month, which are selected and presented by your neighbors. This year the theme for the films is biographies. Following the presentation there is usually a lively discussion. The next film night is coming up, on Wednesday, January 18th at 6:30 in the Rotunda with the biography of Alice Paul and the National Women’s Party and women’s suffrage—“Iron Jawed Maiden.” This film will be presented by Glenn & Clara Pfeifer with a new sound system that they have in...

Civano Community School Offers Farm to Table

By Pam Bateman The Civano Community School is thrilled to be delivering healthy, delicious meals to our students and staff. As many of you know, our kitchen opened last February after many years of fundraising and planning. We serve lunch three days a week, have one day to prep for the week, and one day for the kids to get in the kitchen and have some hands-on experience. Our menu is based around healthy farm-to-table ingredients. We have a wonderful partnership with Sleeping Frog Farms. They supply us with organic, locally grown produce for our lunches. Our local, organic...

Civano Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair

By Linda Green, for Team Holiday Fair December 3, 2011, is the date to save. We are putting together an event that is sure to bring enjoyment to all who attend. The location is on Civano Boulevard, from the Yoga House and along the common area to Seven Generations, including the empty lot. The fair will start at 10 a.m. and will go all day until 4 p.m. This fair was started in 2006 by Judyth Willis, Pam Bateman, and Kay Wagner after reading The Great Neighborhood Book. They decided to implement some of its ideas by bringing attention...
