He Said, She Said? Becomes ‘New at the Movies’: Bully and The Kid with a Bike

By Rich and Ann Bates Our column, formerly called “He Said, She Said,” was not working for us; it started in the usual way with us talking about those movies we had seen, discussing and disagreeing about what we were seeing. But we have found that just not to be the case, nor are we professional film critics writing on a regular basis for The Town Crier, so now we just call this a discussion, with a change in the title. Welcome to “New at the Movies”! We have two powerful films to share this month, both dealing with...

February Soup Supper—A Super Success!

By Sue Nedrow Thanks to you, Civano folks, I am so pleased to report that the February Soup Supper was a success! Thanks from both Judyth and me for your enthusiastic support. Civano folks seemed ready to pass the word, cook, read the emails, mailbox signs, the neighbor website, and The Town Crier to make the dinner a winner. Thanks to the soup cooks, the sign maker, the committee people who spread the word, and the speaker, and all the folks who helped make the evening possible. We had nine soups, several salads, a variety of breads, and numerous...

by Bonnie Vining Live Acoustic Venue Association, LAVA, will present a series of ten concerts this spring at Abounding Grace Sanctuary. Advance tickets for all LAVA shows are now available on Brown Paper Tickets at www.brownpapertickets.com/producer/98302. The series opened with popular Celtic violinist and Native American flutist, Arvel Bird, on January 14, doing a show called “Fiddle-icious.” Arvel is an accomplished violinist, Native American flutist, and four-time Indiana State Fiddle Champion. His style blends the traditions of Indian fiddle with influences from his Celtic/bluegrass roots. Classically trained as a child, he later toured with Glen Campbell for six years,...

He Said, She Said

He Said, She Said

by Rich and Ann Bates He Said: Two distinctive films were released at year’s end stand apart from all others. Both appear destined to become favorites of folks who love movies. The first is Martin Scorsese’s Hugo based upon the children’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick. To me this is an absolutely perfect film in every sense of the word, from its unique opening credits to the landscape of a watch becoming the busy cross sections of Paris, to the story line of a homeless boy keeping the clocks at the train station in order,...

Film Nights are Back!

Film Nights are Back!

By Rich and Ann Bates Last fall and winter’s film nights dealing with food films were a wonderful experience for watching films, discussing what we saw and experienced, plus dining out in a restaurant suggested by the film’s culinary source. It was a very good program and seemed to be enjoyed by many people. Film nights are back now, and this year with the theme of “Film Biographies” the program began on November 9, and continue on the third Wednesday of each month to April 18. The films will be shown in the Civano Activity Center (the Rotunda), beginning...

Restaurant Review: The Great Burger Search

By Rich and Ann Bates In response to your editor’s pleas for articles, we are now writing another column for The Town Crier. If anyone else would like to contribute, the more the merrier, we say. At any rate, with our arms bent backwards, we agreed to write a column, and this one should be titled “Tucson‘s Burgers.” Unfortunately, we were beat to the draw by the Arizona Daily Star’s “Caliente” Section of August 18th. However, we have certainly enjoyed the research process. Rumor has it that Tucson is one of the few cities of this size who have...

He Said, She Said: Rise of the Planet of the Apes + The Help

By Rich and Ann Bates The Rise of the Planet of the Apes Summer Movies…. The multi-plexes are alive and well with a whole spate of 3D and summer action movies. There is one current film that falls into this genre that, to me, stands out as somewhat remarkable. It is Rise of the Planet of the Apes (120 minutes) directed by Rupert Wyatt, starring James Franco, Frieda Pinto, John Lithgow, and Tom Felton. Set in modern day San Francisco, it tells the story of a scientist, Will Rodman (Franco) working to find a cure for Alzheimer’s that his father (Lithgow)...

Sunday Soup Suppers Canceled

By Suzanne Trevino The planning committee of this Sunday evening feature has decided to cancel the event for the present. Although it has been great fun, as well as a tremendous “community-meet-yourself” event, attendance was down last year, and it was decided to give it a rest for awhile. If anyone would like to take a turn at organizing the evening, please “go forth” with all our good wishes. From the former organizers, Suzanne Trevino and Rich & Ann Bates

LAVA Presents New Season at Abounding Grace Sanctuary

By Bonnie Vining LAVA to Present Fifth Season of Music at Abounding Grace Sanctuary On September 10, LAVA’s popular Abounding Grace Sanctuary series will open its fifth season with the Tim Weed Band. Tim is a virtuosic banjo player and soulful vocalist who once lived in Tucson and played under his full name, Tim Wiedenkeller. He is now enjoying a successful career in the San Francisco Bay area under the much easier to remember name, “Tim Weed.” Abounding Grace Sanctuary is a comfortable, family-friendly venue, located at 2450 S. Kolb on the southeast side of Tucson. Pastor Keith Hardy,...
