Plant More Trees to Help Avoid Accidents

As usually happens when the weather turns to summer (read, “heat arrives”), the number of folks walking, riding bikes or pushing strollers in the street while trying to find shade along one of our “tree-lined streets” has increased. This in turn increases the potential for an accident. Automobiles and trucks using our streets see the trees which shade some of the streets as a nuisance, and seem to speed up to get out of here as quickly as possible.

A Sound Investigation: Noise Quality in the Civano Rotunda

As a member of the Civano community, interested in the development of neighborhood friendships and activities, Jerry Walker has undertaken a study of the acoustics in the Rotunda, our neighborhood center. There have been complaints for years that a speaker cannot be heard! Or that the sound echoes in that room get worse when the heating or cooling equipment is being used. Folks, we have a problem!

Vandalism in Civano: The Retelling of an Old, Sad Story

By Judyth Willis -- A few weeks ago, an act of vandalism was committed against a resident’s house in Civano. The remains of a bucket of paint left on the sidewalk in front of the house seemed to say, “There, I did it!” It was a senseless act of vandalism: paint thrown all over the front door, a wall, and the floor of the porch.

What’s Happening Here?

What’s Happening Here?

Editorial by Susan Call With the elections finally concluded (or, at least almost as of this writing) it is time to turn our attention to other pressing matters. The recent incidents of malicious mischief —or is it more properly called vandalism?—that have occurred here in Civano demand our immediate attention. Some folks may remember when someone deliberately broke off the low street lights that lined Nightbloom Way, leaving nearly the entire street in the dark at night. Those lights were replaced with a different kind of light, thanks to a group of our neighbors and residents, at great savings to…

Running Scared

Running Scared

By Ardyce Whalen Whew! The election is over, the profusion of negative political ads no longer clogs our media and our minds. We can take a deep breath, relax, and get back to normal living again. But one thing still bothers me: Why would those who want a “simpler, smaller, and smarter government” want invasive and extensive control over women’s bodies? It doesn’t make sense; I decided to do some digging in our history for an answer. I found much of the following information in the book, When Abortion Was a Crime, by Leslie J. Reagan. Common law during the…

Summer Travels and Ideas: An Editorial

By Susan Call “Oh, the places I’ve been, the wonders I’ve seen….” With apologies to Dr. Seuss, I have been treated to several amazing places this summer. Some of these were so interesting that I wish they were closer to Civano — or at least could serve to inspire us to emulate them. In mid-June I was in Phoenix (don’t bother asking why) and I became acquainted with the Phoenix Convention Center. I had been there before in 1997, and since then the metropolitan gathering spot has been completely redesigned and remodeled. The newly completed functional civic center, along with…

Waving Hello for a Friendlier and Safer Neighborhood

Waving Hello for a Friendlier and Safer Neighborhood

By Simmons Buntin On the thinly paved roads of rural Oklahoma, it’s one finger raised from the top of the steering wheel. On the rolling oak hammocks of east central Texas, it’s a pinch of the hat brim in unison with a nod. In the sultry backwoods of Mississippi and Alabama, it’s raising four fingers from the gentle motion of the fanning hand. And in the southeastern Arizona community of Civano and Sierra Morado, it’s surprisingly absent. I’m talking about waving to neighbors to say hello. Many of the communities I’ve been to have their own, slightly unique way of…

The Wrong Statue? Or the Wrong Greenway? An Arizona History

May 16, 2012
John Greenway 003small

By Susan Call In January the Arizona Daily Star announced in an article by Phil Villarreal that a sculptor in Sonoita was making a statue of Barry Goldwater. This would be placed in the Statuary Hall of the Capitol in Washington, D. C., replacing the statue there of John Greenway, Arizona businessman, engineer, miner and rancher. Shortly thereafter, the Nogales International newspaper article by Marion Vendituoli announced, “Local sculptor to create statue of Sen. Barry Goldwater for U.S. Capitol,” and stated that this would replace the statue of Isabella Greenway. Apparently the excitement of having a local artist create a…

Lend Your Voice to Adopt Civano’s Solar Energy Code Across Tucson

Lend Your Voice to Adopt Civano’s Solar Energy Code Across Tucson

By Al Nichols The Tucson Solar Village, as Civano was originally called, was conceived and constructed to have all buildings utilize solar energy in a large-scale community setting. In the first round of Tucson’s Code Committee consideration of adopting Civano’s energy code for all new buildings citywide, in mid-April, the vote failed for lack of Council member support. Additional education of City leaders is now under way. On the table for discussion by the advisory committee is the continued use of the Sustainable Energy Standard (SES), first adopted in 1998 for Civano. The Standard requires a high-performance building envelop for…
