The Wrong Statue? Or the Wrong Greenway? An Arizona History

By Susan Call In January the Arizona Daily Star announced in an article by Phil Villarreal that a sculptor in Sonoita was making a statue of Barry Goldwater. This would be placed in the Statuary Hall of the Capitol in Washington, D. C., replacing the statue there of John Greenway, Arizona businessman, engineer, miner and rancher. Shortly thereafter, the Nogales International newspaper article by Marion Vendituoli announced, “Local sculptor to create statue of Sen. Barry Goldwater for U.S. Capitol,” and stated that this would replace the statue of Isabella Greenway. Apparently the excitement of having a local artist create...

Lend Your Voice to Adopt Civano’s Solar Energy Code Across Tucson

By Al Nichols The Tucson Solar Village, as Civano was originally called, was conceived and constructed to have all buildings utilize solar energy in a large-scale community setting. In the first round of Tucson’s Code Committee consideration of adopting Civano’s energy code for all new buildings citywide, in mid-April, the vote failed for lack of Council member support. Additional education of City leaders is now under way. On the table for discussion by the advisory committee is the continued use of the Sustainable Energy Standard (SES), first adopted in 1998 for Civano. The Standard requires a high-performance building envelop...

Dog Park

By Susan Call  Some happenings that everyone in Civano should be aware of include the creation of a new HOA committee:  the CCAAC, which replaces the Rotunda Committee. This committee originally was created to care for the neighborhood center building, where the activities of the Civano Neighborhood Association typically take place. The committee serves as an interface between the neighborhood association and the home owners association, at least as I understand it. (The discussion of whether Houghton’s prolonged construction renders it scenic or not is the topic for another article altogether.) At the crux of the matter is how businesses in Civano let people know about themselves. Word of mouth is considered the best means of advertising—one neighbor or friend passing on their recommendations about businesses to another friend or...

From the Editor: Trouble in Paradise?

By Susan Call, Editor Here in Civano we’ve just had a taste in September of the road construction to come on Houghton Road (that’s pronounced hoe… not how… according to that arbiter of information, the Arizona Daily Star). How do you think you’ll survive the next many months as the road progresses? Does it make it more tolerable to believe that we will end up with an attractively landscaped, divided four-lane roadway? Remember, the northern access to Civano Boulevard off Houghton is scheduled to be closed to southbound entering traffic. Otherwise, we hope and expect that the road will...
