Aah, Springtime!

March 24, 2012
Boojums and Cardons in Baja, by Jerry Wheeler

By Susan Call Spring in the desert is always surprising, especially to those folks from other regions who look for the decrease in freezing days and the tentative bloom of trees and flowers. Since we are blessed with blue skies and warm days almost all year long (yes, I know, sometimes too warm!), we seek other signs that it is spring. These might be the near-perfect temperatures as well as the masses of wildflowers we are treated to if the weather has cooperated. But one of the most unique surprises of our springtime can only be enjoyed off the coast…

A Horse? Of Course!

Frosty wonders what's so funny

By Ardi C. Whalen “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” Winston Churchill said it, and I’d be willing to bet that most horse owners share this sentiment. Just looking at Mike’s beautiful, gentle horse, Frosty, awakened in me my childhood dream of owning a horse.  Frosty is a Missouri Fox Trotter. This means that he possesses a unique gait known as the fox trot, a four-beat diagonal gait in which the horse appears to walk with his front legs and trot with his hind legs. It’s a smooth…

From the Editor: Civano Community News

March 24, 2012
Dog Park

By Susan Call  Some happenings that everyone in Civano should be aware of include the creation of a new HOA committee:  the CCAAC, which replaces the Rotunda Committee. This committee originally was created to care for the neighborhood center building, where the activities of the Civano Neighborhood Association typically take place. The committee serves as an interface between the neighborhood association and the home owners association, at least as I understand it. The CCAAC stands for Civano Common Area Assets Committee, so I guess the duties of the former Rotunda Committee have been expanded too. At any rate, some of…

Civano Community School News: Remembering Brenda Patrick

By Pam Bateman On the morning of February 22, Phil Odgen came by the school to deliver two boxes of books for the middle school and to tell us the sad news of Brenda Patrick’s passing. Brenda and her husband, Phil, have always been big supporters of the school, and in this last year Brenda heard the call for 100 books for the middle school, and she answered that call again and again! She alone sent hundreds of books to the school, and most probably doubled the amount of books on our middle school shelves in this school year. She…

He Said, She Said: Films from Iran and Japan

March 24, 2012
arrietty

by Rich and Ann Bates He Said: “A Separation” (Iran, Asgher Farhadi) by Rich Bates Films don’t get any more complex that this, and to make it extra rewarding, it’s a foreign film from Iran which might bend preconceived ideas about the country and its people. The story line is quite simple: a wife, Simin (Leila Hatami) wants to separate from her husband, Nader (Peyman Moadi) to “save” their daughter, Termeh (Sarina Farhadi) from what she perceives as the country’s new values in terms of customs and religion, entrapping them, with the old beliefs abandoned. This is not just about…

Natural Landscaping in Civano

March 24, 2012
Wildflower's by Sue's House, Civano Blvd.

by Susan Call Some of the homes in our neighborhood are blessed by having gardeners dwelling therein. Or, perhaps, it is the love of the desert exhibited by the owners, but whatever, the springtime allows their talents and care for the native plants to really shine. Here are a few photos to celebrate the desert this time of year.

Supporting Civano Businesses – Signage or Not

Supporting Civano Businesses – Signage or Not

By Susan Hamilton We’ve all seen the brightly colored signs on Houghton touting certain Civano businesses. Some people welcome the signage on this busy thoroughfare while others may be uncomfortable with any signs on what is designated as a scenic corridor. (The discussion of whether Houghton’s prolonged construction renders it scenic or not is the topic for another article altogether.) At the crux of the matter is how businesses in Civano let people know about themselves. Word of mouth is considered the best means of advertising—one neighbor or friend passing on their recommendations about businesses to another friend or neighbor.…
