From the Editor: Trouble in Paradise?

From the Editor: Trouble in Paradise?

By Susan Call, Editor Here in Civano we’ve just had a taste in September of the road construction to come on Houghton Road (that’s pronounced hoe… not how… according to that arbiter of information, the Arizona Daily Star). How do you think you’ll survive the next many months as the road progresses? Does it make it more tolerable to believe that we will end up with an attractively landscaped, divided four-lane roadway? Remember, the northern access to Civano Boulevard off Houghton is scheduled to be closed to southbound entering traffic. Otherwise, we hope and expect that the road will be…

Pets and Desert Critters: In Ming Garcia, East Meets West

By Ardi C. Whalen Ming Garcia! After reading the above title, you are probably doing a double take. Isn’t this supposed to be a column featuring Civano pets? Yes it is, and Ming Garcia is the name of Pat and Ron Canady’s little dog, known informally as “Ming,” a.k.a. “Princess,” for, according to Pat, “She rules the house.” Curious about this unusual name for a canine companion, I asked Pat how they came up with it. “Ming,” she said, “is for the Ming Dynasty in China, the origin of the Pug dog.” Always curious, I Googled “Pug dog,” and I…

The Joys (and Woes) of an Amateur Gardener

By Linda Green Some of the local Civano residents know me as the “watering plant lady!” Yup, that’s me, but I do so much more. I also do garden upkeep for those folks who go away for the summer but want to return in the fall to the wonderful plants and flowers they had created in the springtime. I have also been creating a great and fun garden in my own front yard. Ahhh, what is lush and colorful in March through May might not always stay that way until about mid-November without a lot of effort. Over the past…

Civano Community School Offers Farm to Table

By Pam Bateman The Civano Community School is thrilled to be delivering healthy, delicious meals to our students and staff. As many of you know, our kitchen opened last February after many years of fundraising and planning. We serve lunch three days a week, have one day to prep for the week, and one day for the kids to get in the kitchen and have some hands-on experience. Our menu is based around healthy farm-to-table ingredients. We have a wonderful partnership with Sleeping Frog Farms. They supply us with organic, locally grown produce for our lunches. Our local, organic beef…

Restaurant Review: Happy Hour at Downtown Kitchen + Cocktails

by Rich and Ann Bates Half-price happy hours are an excellent bargain, a way of getting to know the different kitchens around town, and of sampling some pretty amazing food items that are not the happy hour fare that we used to know. Most are upscale, serving select items and a varied assortment of menu items to attract all tastes. So, for these fall and winter months we are going to highlight a few of the best bargains that we have found in Tucson, and encourage participation from Civano to open up new places, new ideas. Janos Wilder opened Downtown…

The fair will start at 10 a.m. and will go all day until 4 p.m. This fair was started in 2006 by Judyth Willis, Pam Bateman, and Kay Wagner after reading The Great Neighborhood Book. They decided to implement some of its ideas by bringing attention to…

Film Nights are Back!

By Rich and Ann Bates Last fall and winter’s film nights dealing with food films were a wonderful experience for watching films, discussing what we saw and experienced, plus dining out in a restaurant suggested by the film’s culinary source. It was a very good program and seemed to be enjoyed by many people. Film nights are back now, and this year with the theme of “Film Biographies” the program began on November 9, and continue on the third Wednesday of each month to April 18. The films will be shown in the Civano Activity Center (the Rotunda), beginning at…
