Civano Celebrates 4th of July!

Photos by Al Nichols, Al Nichols Engineering, Inc. Check out all the 4th of July galleries at our community photo gallery site: civano.shutterfly.com. Civano continued its annual tradition of the 4th of July parade this Independence Day. More than 50 neighbors gathered at the Civano Neighborhood Center to decorate their bikes, wagons, scooters, and more before marching west down Seven Generations Boulevard, south down Thunder Sky, and then east on Cerulean before concluding at the south sports park and pool. At the pool, paraders and other community members and guests were treated to such local yummy favorites as Eegees. Here…

On Southern Forests: Longleaf Pine, Gopher Tortoises, and Fire, Oh My!

On Southern Forests: Longleaf Pine, Gopher Tortoises, and Fire, Oh My!

By Susan Call The southeastern part of our country has many differences from the Southwest where I normally live, but there is one thing both areas have in common — forest fires. The southeast has developed some unique species that are dependent on forest fires, one being longleaf pine trees (Pinus palustris). These distinctive pines have needles about 8 inches long, and grow in few other places than the Southeast. You probably realize that much of the pulp wood used in the making of paper and building materials comes from this area of the country. Longleaf and loblolly pines are…

He Said, She Said: Movies of Adolescence

By Rich and Ann Bates He Said… We have missed a month or two for our column, and will make amends. Since feedback reported that this column was too long, and often repeated the same thing, we will attempt a new format of reviewing different films of interest to this community. My choice of films are really two fine films, one from Denmark, the other from Holland; both were nominees for Best Foreign Film of 2010. Both played at the Loft Cinema recently and can now be put into your queue from Netflix for what looks to be a long,…

I am Gluten and Lactose Intolerant…

I am Gluten and Lactose Intolerant…

By Suzanne Trevino In other words, I can’t eat wheat, rye, or barley flour, dairy products, or anything to “irritate” my picky, demanding insides (irritable bowel syndrome, IBS), such as insoluble fiber, high fat, high acidic foods, alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, or anything carbonated, like sodas. This seems to be a “new age” phenomenon shared across the population but zeroing in on aging women. Children show gluten intolerance with celiac disease.  Fortunately, food producers are rapidly catching up with production of foods we “afflicted” can eat. Whole wheat bread is an obvious no-no.  Unfortunately, there is a lot of hidden gluten…

Best of Friends: Rags and Peaches

By Ardi C. Whalen Step inside the attractive home of Brenda Patrick and Phil Ogden, and you wonder who really owns this home. On a small table is a one-third completed jig saw puzzle, for human entertainment, but to your right is a three-step, carpeted staircase leading to a comfy place on the sofa — Peaches’ place. (Peaches is a small white poodle with magnificent dark eyes.) The floor beside the dining room table sports two well-padded dog beds — one for Peaches and the other for her possible co-owner of this house, Rags, a black poodle/terrier mix. And they…

From the Editor: Civano’s Dog Park Becoming a Reality

By Susan Call Civano is known as a pet-friendly community, as attested to by the number of dogs and their owners who daily parade on our sidewalks and tree-shaded pathways. For several years there has been an active program to develop a dog park for the community where dogs could be safely allowed off-leash. When I first moved into my new home in 2006, one of the first issues before the homeowners association was the creation of a dog park. Now it seems that this may actually be nearing existence. The plan has gone through several possible locations, until we…

Did You Know that Super Tuscan Wines Need Not Contain Sangiovese?

Did You Know that Super Tuscan Wines Need Not Contain Sangiovese?

Wine lovers generally know that Super Tuscan wines come from the north of Italy. They also “know” that the primary wine in a Super Tuscan is Sangiovese. Read on for some surprises about Super Tuscans. Super Tuscans do come from the Italian north. Perhaps you do not know that the Super Tuscans do not conform with the Italian DOC/DOCG, the regulations pertaining to wine making in Italy. The term “Super Tuscan” describes any Tuscan red wine that does not adhere to traditional blending laws for the region. For example, Chianti Classico wines are made from a blend of grapes with…

Storm Anxiety in Dogs

Storm Anxiety in Dogs

By Deborah Brightstar, The Doggie Diva It’s thunderstorm season, and with thunderstorms come thunder! Like fireworks during the 4th of July, thunder can be a very scary thing for some dogs while others are oblivious. If you’ve read or seen the movie Marley and Me, you are aware of poor Marley’s extreme fear of thunderstorms to the point of mass destruction! When dogs are afraid they are thrown into their basic animal instincts of fight or flight.  They are either searching to take cover somewhere they feel safe or they may go on a wild frenzy of destruction trying to…

Keeping Pets Safe in the Summer

Keeping Pets Safe in the Summer

By Deborah Brightstar, The Doggie Diva Summers in the desert can be brutal with all kinds of hazards to be aware of, from the heat, to the rains, to all the unwelcome critters. Please be mindful of your pets and make sure they have plenty of shade and water as well as protection from snakes, Colorado River toads, scorpions and spiders, and other health hazards. Did you know it is a law that you must provide adequate shade and water outside at all times for your pets? This includes keeping in mind the sun’s changing position throughout the day. If…

Join the Civano Bridge Group!

By Suzanne Trevino The Civano Bridge Group is looking for anyone with former bridge or pinochle experience — and an “addiction to cards”. We play intermittently in homes. Also we schedule a monthly potluck and tournament. New members are asked to play with members at least one time to check level of skill. We’re happy to have fairly new players; we can discuss bidding and play at the table. Ann Edwards plans a refresher course, to be announced: check back here or on the Civano discussion forum for the latest news. Please contact Suzanne Trevino at 520.296.2656 if interested.
