June Featured Yacht - The Launch of Jerry Walker's Soling One Meter

Tank Testing Jerry's Boat

CMYA's Three Boat Fleet - Ocean Star on Left and Two S1M's

The last report of the Civano Micro Yachting Association  announced its formation.  At the time CMYA had two boats in the water and three under construction.  Now a third boat is in the water.  This one was built by Jerry Walker, a Civano resident. It is a Soling One Meter, shortened to S1M.

One of the pictures shows how CMYA members “tank test” their boats. Jerry’s was in the “tank” checking out repairs because it had demonstrated a significant leak during its first outing at the pond. The picture of the three boats represents the current CMYA fleet.

“WineCooler4U.com” is  Jerry’s boat during its launch sail. Jerry Walker and Bill Brown, our Commodore, are featured in the fourth picture.

The S1M is a strong and lively one-design radio-controlled model sail boat (40 inches long), designed for any wind and sea condition. It is forgiving in the hands of a new skipper while offering a sailing challenge that keeps veteran skippers involved in the class for years.

The Soling One Meter is a scale model of the one-design Olympic triple-handed Soling class keelboat and was introduced to the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA) in 1993.  Since that time, it has grown to become the largest class of model boats in the US registered with the American Model Yachting Association (AMYA) — with more than 2,700 hull/sail numbers assigned since the kit was first released for production.

CMYA is not exclusively a S1M activity but we would like to build a fleet of them to increase the challenge of one-design racing.

If the idea of model yachting intrigues you, you can be the next launch to be featured in the “Town Crier”.  Jerry is a year-round Civano resident. Call him (760-7794) to discuss CMYA activities and how you can join the fun.  Also, we are available to give advice and the benefit of our building experiences if you were to choose to build.  Our plans are to have organized sailing on Wednesday mornings.  So far this spring the winds have been pretty light during the morning hours so we continue to discuss alternatives.
