My Dog, Spot

By Ardi C. Whalen “If there’s a Heaven for doggies there’s one thing I know . . .  [Spot] . . . has a wonderful home.” I acquired Spot, a mutt, when she was seven weeks old and I was seven years old. I loved her passionately from the moment I smelled her sweet puppy smell and cuddled her puppy pudginess. For years she was one of my best friends, second only to my sister, Marlys. Whenever I felt bad, I could count on her love to comfort me. She comforted me when I was hurt; she joined me in…

Fashionable Gardening: Starting a Vegetable Garden in Four Easy Steps

By Mel Shipley ACNP In this edition of Fashionable Gardening, we’ll get your vegetable garden going in four easy steps: Step 1 – Choose a Spot Start small, with an area about 6 by 9 feet, so that you don’t get overwhelmed. Look for a level, sheltered site that’s sunny for at least four to six hours a day, and close enough to a faucet or rain barrel that watering won’t be a problem. Of course you can always add an irrigation system later, for now though let’s just keep it simple. * Don’t worry if space an issue, you…

Civano Yacht Club Blog Leaves Port

By Bill Brown, Jerry Walker, and Scott Lantz Ahoy and welcome abroad!!! That’s crusty, salty sailor talk for “Hello, come join us.” Yes, there are some frustrated sailors among our diverse and multi-interest Civano community. For lack of both “real” sailboats and open waters, a creative group of crusty Civano sailors have come together to form the Civano Micro Yachting Association, what we’ll refer to in The Town Crier, for brevity’s sake, as the Civano Yacht Club. Before you attempt to imagine how any family in Civano can get a lavish yacht in their garage, let me elaborate on our…

What’s in a Name? Civano Streets Honor Community Leaders

Part 2 of a 2-part series (view Part 1 in our last print issue) By Paul Rollins In 1997, a committee was established and candidates were selected to have streets in Civano named in their honor. All of the nominees represent the rich community history and deep personal values found in people throughout Tucson’s neighborhoods. A “Street Naming Ceremony” took place on the site in May 1998. An historical plaque, showcasing the honorees, was on display and biographies were available in a brochure at the Civano Welcome Center, located in the Neighborhood Center, during Civano’s first years of development. Continuing…

Changes at the Yoga House

By Susan Hamilton If you haven’t been to classes at the Yoga House at Civano in awhile, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the changes. Jenny Kendall, the new manager since February, has returned the Yoga House to Ingrid Anderson’s original vision for the studio. It’s once again a gathering site for the Civano community and southeast-side residents as well as a warm and welcoming place to exercise. Each month, gatherings are held at the Yoga House. Recently on a Friday afternoon, people met teachers, sampled classes, enjoyed each other’s company, and shared snacks and drinks at a patio party. Tea…

From the Editor: New Town Crier!

Welcome to the new, improved, greener The Town Crier! We hope this version will be well received; our small test audience so far seems quite pleased. Still, we want to receive your comments. Send them to me at towncrier@civanoneighbors.com. Our online survey conducted last month brought 30 responses, of which 93% said they do read The Town Crier. A couple of responses were received as emails. These indicated preferences for articles of personal interest, or about community residents, which is as it should be for a neighborhood newspaper. People want to know what’s going on. An interesting finding was that…

Itchy eyes are caused by histamine, a protein which is released from immune cells called mast cells in the ocular tissue. If you are suffering from ocular allergies, those affecting the eyes, there are a few things that can be done about it.
